Mandrill vs. MailChimp
Mandrill is a transactional email platform created by MailChimp to provide a customized delivery service for e-commerce emails and automated transactional emails. For instance, password reminder emails, purchase confirmations, and product notifications are delivered using Mandrills automated transactional email service. As both Mandrill and MailChimp are used to send emails, they both serve a distinct purpose.
MailChimp is an email service primarily used to send campaigns allowing you to send them to various recipients at once, making it especially ideal for marketing purposes. In comparison to MailChimp, Mandrill is a transactional email service allowing you to send emails to only one recipient at a time.
A subscriber-based platform, MailChimp, allows you to create lists and send campaigns to your confirmed subscribers whereas Mandrill is a recipient-based platform. Compared to MailChimp, with Mandrill, you cannot save contact lists along with the recipient’s information in the system. To carry over date to your Mandrill account an API request or SMTP message is required.
MailChimp & Mandrill Billing
MailChimp offers the following payment plans:
- Forever Free
- Monthly Plans
- Pay As You Go
All plans incorporate various features to accommodate your needs.
Mandrill remains an add-on service to any of the MailChimp Monthly Plans. With Mandrill, you may purchase email blocks that provide email credits that recur as a monthly rate.
All users who have the Forever Free or Pay As You Go plans cannot use Mandrill with the exception they switch to a Monthly Plan.
Creating & Sending Emails
MailChimp provides the user the means to design campaigns making it an easy to use platform for those who possess no prior knowledge of HTML coding. Once the campaign is to your liking, you can then schedule and send it directly from MailChimp.
On the other contrary, Mandrill requires you have prior knowledge of HTML and API coding to send emails. Mandrill does not offer the tools and features as that of MailChimp. Mandrill requires an API, or an SMTP integration to send an email when utilizing the system.
